The Journey

Discover the Timeless Beauty of Portugal
Portugal’s rolling vineyards, ancient cities, and shimmering waterways create an atmosphere that feels both historic and enchantingly alive. Its gentle charm draws you in until you can’t help but fall in love with the land and its people.

Jewish Portugal: A Hidden Heritage
Once home to more than 150 Jewish communities, Portugal’s Judiarias thrived until the Inquisition of 1496. Though many Jews fled or were forced to convert, others practiced their faith in secret. Today, subtle traces of their presence—mezuzah markings, symbolic carvings, and evocative place names—still echo throughout the region.

    Itinerary

    Day 1 (Sun)

Arrive at Porto International Airport for a warm meet‑and‑greet before transferring to your hotel. Afternoon activities will vary based on flight arrival times—your adventure begins the moment you land!

    Day 2 (Mon) - Porto

We kick off the day exploring the enchanting city of Porto, whose historic center—now a UNESCO World Heritage Site—showcases centuries of stunning architecture and irresistible charm. From the Sé Cathedral, once home to Porto’s first synagogue, to Monte dos Olivais, the former Jewish Quarter, the city’s romance and heritage unfold at every turn.

The morning includes a guided walking and bus tour of Porto’s most iconic highlights. In the afternoon, we visit the magnificent Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue—founded in 1938 and the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula.

    Day 3 (Tues) – Trancoso & Belmonte

Today we venture into the Beira Interior region to explore two of Portugal’s “12 Historical Villages”Belmonte and Trancoso—both rich with Crypto‑Jewish heritage.

    Belmonte
This hilltop village, home to descendants of Jews who secretly maintained their faith through the Inquisition, offers a moving look into resilience and cultural continuity. We’ll wander through its preserved stone homes, visit the local synagogue, and tour the Museum of Portuguese Jewish History.

    Trancoso
A medieval town once home to a thriving Jewish community, Trancoso still displays Hebrew inscriptions, mezuzah markings, and other historic symbols along its winding streets. We’ll also visit the Isaac Cardoso Interpretation Centre for Jewish Culture, which memorializes the region’s Jewish legacy, including the 515 known victims of the Inquisition.

    Day 4 (Wed) – Coimbra

Today we dive into the secular and Jewish heritage of Coimbra, a UNESCO‑recognized town known as the “Oxford or Cambridge of Portugal” and home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Jewish Sephardic influence has shaped Coimbra’s culture for centuries, and its historic streets reveal stories at every corner.

Day 5 (Thurs) – Braga and Guimaraes

We explore the UNESCO medieval cities of Braga and Guimarães, featuring castle tours, charming town centers, and excellent shopping.

    Braga
Nicknamed the “Rome of Portugal,” Braga is the heart of the Minho region. We’ll take in its green mountains, valleys, rivers, Baroque architecture, and beautifully ornamented gardens.

    Guimarães
The birthplace of Portugal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, Guimarães is where the nation’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques, was born. We’ll explore medieval structures, bustling squares, and picturesque historic districts.

Day 6 (Fri) – Adventure Day!

    Choose your perfect adventure:

Option 1: Paiva Walkways, Suspension Bridge & Douro River Kayaking

The Paiva Walkways stretch along the dramatic left bank of the Paiva River. This 8 km hike winds through waterfalls, quartz formations, and untouched nature, ending with a crossing of Bridge 516—one of Europe’s longest suspended pedestrian bridges—soaring over a stunning gorge.

Afterward, enjoy a half‑day kayaking experience on the breathtaking Douro River, one of the world’s most beautiful waterways.
